Teeth Cleaning Near You
Visiting your dentist every 6 months for a regular check-up and cleaning is an important part of maintaining good oral health. Dental cleanings and check-ups are preventative measures used to detect the early onset of any dental diseases and prevent the development of these diseases through the practice of good oral hygiene. Regular checkups will also ensure your teeth receive a deep cleaning that cannot be achieved with regular brushing and flossing.
If you are visiting a new dentist or it has been some time since you last visited, a review of your oral history will occur before beginning the exam and cleaning process. Thereafter, the following steps will be taken:
- Full Examination – Your dentist will conduct a full examination of the state of your teeth, gums, and mouth. This is done to ensure that there are no signs of disease or other oral issues. If there are, they can be detected and treated early on to avoid more serious issues from occurring.
- X-rays – Our dental office is fully digital and utilizes technology that saves time and avoids the unnecessary emission of radiation. Depending on the age of the patient, they may be at risk for oral diseases and display symptoms that would otherwise go unnoticed without x-rays being taken. X-rays allow your dentist to detect problems such as damage to the jawbone, impacted teeth, cysts, decay, and other issues.
- Thorough Cleaning – During your dental cleaning, special cleaning instruments will be used below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar build-up. Bacteria in the mouth that is not removed can lead to the development of cavities, bad breath, gum disease, and other oral complications.
- Scaling and Polishing- There are different types of tools that your Hygienist will use for tartar build-up above and below the gum line. These include handheld instruments as well as ultrasonic scalers that use water. The amount of scaling is different for each patient based on the amount of tartar accumulated which is determined by the diligence of home oral care and genetic factors. After scaling a polishing is done to remove any surface staining on the teeth. This is done by using a soft polishing cup and flavored polishing paste which the patient can choose. The polish will leave your teeth feeling smooth and shiny.
- Fluoride Treatment – A Flouride treatment may be recommended based on the patient’s individual needs and dental decay history. This treatment is implemented to protect your teeth and help them fight against cavities for several months. You may be able to choose the flavor used in the fluoride treatment. This may be applied topically as a foam or gel using trays that sit in the mouth for approximately one minute or maybe painted right onto the teeth. After receiving this treatment it is recommended to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
Your dentist will complete a thorough exam assessing all teeth and any radiographs that were taken. Some recommendations may be made to help keep your teeth in good health. A follow-up cleaning and check-up are typically scheduled in advance for patients’ convenience.
There are many different options to keep our patients comfortable during their hygiene appointments. These include providing local anesthetic for deeper scaling as well as providing neck pillows, sunglasses and blankets to make your visit more comfortable.
