Dental Crowns Near You
A crown is created to cover or cap a tooth that is damaged. The crown provides additional strength to the weakened tooth as well as helps improve the shape, alignment and overall appearance. It can be used for a variety of different dental procedures that require the replacement or reinforcement of a tooth. For example, a crown is used for dental implants, placed on top of the implant, to provide the look and function of a natural tooth.
Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be created to match the look and color of a patient’s natural teeth. Other materials used to make crowns include gold and metal alloys as well as acrylic. The gold and metal alloys are stronger than porcelain and are usually recommended for teeth in the back of the mouth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is also used as the combination provides a strong and aesthetic reinforcement of the tooth.
Your dentist may recommend a crown for one of the following reasons:
- to replace a large filling where there isn’t enough tooth remaining
- to protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- to help restore a tooth that is fractured
- to attach a bridge
- to cover a dental implant
- to cover a misshapen or discoloured tooth
- to cover a tooth that required root canal treatment
Dental Bridges Near You
Your dentist may recommend a bridge if you have one or more teeth missing. When you have gaps in your mouth due to missing teeth, eventually this can cause the remaining teeth to shift and affect your bite. The imbalance created by missing teeth can also result in gum disease and TMJ disorders if left untreated.
Bridges are useful and commonly used in such cases because they span the gaps left by missing teeth. Bridges are placed and cemented to the natural teeth surrounding the space left by the missing teeth. These teeth are referred to as abutments, as they service as anchors for the placed bridge. The replacement tooth, called the pontic, is attached to the crowns that cap the abutments. Bridges give the illusion that all the teeth are intact and provide the function of natural teeth.
How are Crowns and Bridges Made?
Crowns can be made using all metal materials, all-porcelain materials, or a combination of the two. During your first visit, the mouth will be numbed for the comfort of the patient and the affected tooth will be reduced in size to prepare for the crown to fit over it properly. Your dentist will then take an impression of the prepared tooth or teeth.
Often, the patient will receive a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the final crown is being created. When the final crown is created, dental cement is placed inside the crown and thereafter cemented to the prepared tooth. Once the crown is placed the patient’s tooth has restored functionality and health.
Like the dental crown procedure, creating and placing a dental bridge may take a few appointments. During your first visit, the area of the mouth is numbed and the teeth serving as anchors are prepared to support the bridge. Impressions are taken of the prepared teeth and your dentist will place a temporary bridge to serve as protection until the bridge is created.
When the final bridge is created, it will be cemented and anchored to the neighbouring teeth. The cement ensures there is no possibility of removing the bridge and tooth functionality is restored as a result. Dental bridges can last for several years with proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.
