Dental Surgeries and Implants Near You
When a patient requires some form of oral surgery, it can be due to a variety of oral issues such as impacted teeth, tooth loss, infection, jaw-related problems, lesion removal, and sleep apnea. Surgery in the oral cavity can include the following procedures: tooth extractions, gum surgery, bone and gum grafting, biopsies or placement of dental implants as remedies for these issues. The mentioned procedures are explained in further depth below:
Tooth extraction: this can range from simple primary (baby teeth) tooth removal to adult extractions including wisdom tooth removal. In most cases, these are performed with the use of a local anesthetic (dental freezing) similar to when a filling is done on a tooth.
In more complicated cases, there may be a need for a level of sedation, either orally or intravenously to improve patient comfort. This needs to be arranged prior to the date of surgery.
Gum surgery: Gum deficiencies can also occur due to an abnormal eruption, periodontal disease, trauma, heavy bite problems, erosion or improper brushing. Gum surgery can involve the removal of diseased tissue or increasing the amount of gum tissue via grafting. Grafting is performed by taking gum tissue from one area (donor site) of the mouth and placing it onto a gum deficient area. Patients can sometimes have the option to receive tissue from a tissue bank rather than surgically from their own mouths.
Gum grafting helps restore the tissue to its original or ideal form, securing the health of the gum-tooth complex and often improving areas of tooth sensitivity.
Biopsies: This procedure involves the removal of soft tissue to be examined under a microscope. The test will be conducted in a lab setting, allowing for microscopic examination of the tissue sample, to determine if there is abnormal or cancerous tissue present. Most biopsies confirm normal tissue, however, if a more serious growth is discovered, a referral to a specialist associated with that particular type of growth is required.
Incision and drainage: This allows for drainage of infection from an abscess.
Dental Implants
Dental implant surgery is a procedure used to replace a missing tooth or to retain a denture. Implants are typically recommended to replace a missing tooth or rehabilitate someone who has lost a number of teeth due to trauma or disease.
The implant consists of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The implant is made of surgical-grade titanium (similar material to that used in artificial joints) that integrates with the jaw bone. The abutment is thereafter screwed into the implant, sitting above the gum-line. It serves as the connector between the implant and the dental crown, which serves as a replacement tooth.
Dental implants provide a long-term solution for the patient. The dentists at Chancellor Dental Group can perform these procedures to enhance your smile.
