Gum Grafting Near You
Every smile is different, however, if some of your teeth have started to look longer or you experience chronic sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, your gums could be receding. If a patient’s gums recede, this can cause a portion of your tooth’s root to become exposed and vulnerable to oral issues such as gum disease. Gum recession progresses gradually and may go unnoticed for an extended period of time. Gum grafting treatment can help prevent further loss of gum tissue as well as the development of serious oral issues.
Causes of Gum Recession
Gum disease is one of the most common causes of gum recession. Improper oral hygiene, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, and other illnesses can also increase your chances of developing gum disease as well. Other causes for gum recession include the following:
- aggressive or improper brushing
- inflammation of the gums – can be caused by weak immunity
- poor oral hygiene
- genetic factors – tooth position and thickness of gum tissue
- misaligned teeth
- damage caused by dental treatment
- lip piercings
- plaque build up on teeth which leads to gum disease
Different Types of Gum Grafting
There are three types of gum tissue grafts performed, which is dependent on a patient’s specific needs. The graft procedures available include the following:
- Connective-tissue grafts: this method is the most common and used to treat one or more areas of gum recession. This procedure harvest tissue from underneath the roof of the patient’s mouth and stitches it to areas of the gums with exposed root(s).
- Free gingival grafts: the goal of this graft is to increase the amount of hard tissue surrounding the tooth or teeth. This procedure is best used for individuals who have thin gums and need additional tissue to help enlarge them. This procedure helps decrease the likelihood of further gum recession.
- Pedicle grafts: this procedure uses tissue grafted from the gum surrounding or near the tooth that needs repair. The flap is partially cut away, leaving one edge remaining attached. This procedure is only able to be achieved with patients who have a large amount of gum tissue near the tooth.
Depending on the dentist, some prefer to use material from a tissue bank rather than from the roof of the patient’s mouth. However, it can be beneficial to use tissue from the mouth as some tissue-stimulating proteins can promote a patient’s body to grow bone and tissue.
